Our newest WildWeb team member, Claire Long, recently paid a visit to a long-standing, favourite client property of ours, Tongabezi. The romantic luxury lodge, perched along the banks of the Zambezi River, boasts some big credentials and when the opportunity arose for Claire to visit, there was no hesitation.
Flights were booked, bags were packed, and with her hubby by her side, all was set for a magical impromptu (work) holiday. She shared a little about what makes Tongabezi the idyllic location for visiting the falls and discovering the Zambezi River.
“Having visited the Victoria Falls previously, once as a child with my family and again later when I started working, this visit was as thrilling as the previous two. There is something very remarkable about imagining thousands of gallons of water falling 108m down into a pool surrounded by jagged rocks, let alone witnessing the majesty unfold before your own eyes.
Our informative Tongabezi guide, Keegan, explained that in high water over 500 million litres of water flows over the edge every minute, which is equivalent to the whole of Australia’s water usage in an entire year. It all felt so surreal, meandering through the rainforest with the spray of the falls raining down upon us, as Keegan told us the story of David Livingstone.
This is just one of the inclusive activities that Tongabezi offers. Located 18km upstream from the Victoria Falls, the lodge is perfectly situated on the edge of the Zambezi River. The river is the base for most of the activities offered and continues to lure in guests from all over the world with all the different ways it can be experienced. The sunset boat cruise was our favourite way to enjoy the river and witness the hippos and crocodiles that inhabit the wild waterways.
On our second morning, we decided to work off some of Tongabezi’s delicious meals and headed out on a canoe trip. With a hint of courage and a quick safety briefing, we climbed into our canoe for a gentle row along the river. An unexpected nervousness came over me, as I thought about potential hippo drive-bys, but this feeling was quickly eased by our experienced guides. Hippo free, we happily paddled along the care-free waters while staying safe and dry in our canoe.
Tongabezi has so much to offer guests and each season brings a new set of activities to be experienced and a different perspective of the falls. This was a bucket list holiday and one that my hubby and I would repeat in a heartbeat!”
